COMIC: How Much Does Your Model Cost?

Written and illustrated by Abdullah Ali

For those of you non-architects, you should probably know that model making plays a huge part in the bringing-up of an architecture student. We spend countless hours, pulling all-nighters to construct these models, pouring in our blood, sweat and tears. Not to mention the trips the students of Kuwait University have to make from Jarir Bookstore, to Mogahwi Stationary, to Shuwaikh Industrial, to Dasman Complex that eat up many hours, thanks to Kuwait’s tormenting traffic.
Now, for all of you readers, imagine if an instructor or guest juror were to come to your presentation and with his/her subjective opinion, deem your model a piece of junk. But they wouldn’t tell you that; they would physically show you in an unforgivable manner! Of course, in hopes that you would learn to make better models. But, what you really learn is how to keep your immense rage locked up deep down until it is finally unleashed somewhere else. It has happened to all of us at some point in studying architecture.
This comic strip titled “How much does your model cost?” was inspired by a true event that occurred to a student overseas, retold to me by a friend. I can’t even begin to imagine how that student must have felt.
